WHAT DOES RISK MANAGEMENT DO?
The State of Wyoming Risk Management Section (RMS) administers the State
Self Insurance Program pursuant to Wyo. Stat. § 1-41-101, et seq., which
authorizes the payment of liability claims on behalf of State employees,
local law enforcement and selected employees of the University of Wyoming.
The RMS also purchases property insurance for all State owned property to
cover large losses.
State employees are covered for automobile liability and any errors or
omissions which are allegedly committed while in the course and scope of
duties. The RMS pays claims on an employee’s behalf, provides a legal
defense if necessary and also pays any judgments that may be ordered by a
court against a State employee. A “deductible” of up to $2,500.00 may be
assessed an agency if the claim is determined to have been the result of
employee negligence.
The staff of the RMS will provide training seminars on liability and the
Wyoming Governmental Claims Act to any agency that requests it. In addition,
the RMS will conduct loss prevention inspections upon request if one is not
already on the RMS schedule.
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the RMS is to efficiently and effectively protect the assets
and resources of the State of Wyoming, efficiently process claims against
the State, and continually plan for recovery of our resources should
something go wrong.
The RMS works to fulfill its mission by offering effective and efficient
risk management services to State agencies and employees. This mission can
be accomplished through the proactive use of risk management and insurance
programs and safety and loss control techniques.
The Section provides insurance coverage for all State agencies to include
liability, property, and vehicle coverage.
Following are the RMS’s goals and objectives:
- Maintain financial stability of the State Self Insurance Program.
- Conduct loss prevention inspections at key State properties each year to
reduce losses.
- Establish effective loss prevention strategies within State government to
reduce losses.
- Provide training for State employees such as defensive driving to help
mitigate losses.
